So easy that it's tough!

Work is easy out here in the Gulf. Even more so in Qatar. But it's really not easy when things are so easy. Not for me at least.

I work best under pressure. That's when I produce the maximum results. Most of yall would be with me on this one.

But don't misunderstand... I don't care much for how much profits the company I work for makes coz of me. But I do like looking at what I do, and being happy or satisfied with it. After all, it's what I do. It's what my identity is. It's what makes or breaks my confidence in my everyday life.

Maybe in that sense, work is important to an extent.

There is a lack of motivation here. No one cares what you do. Your boss would maybe once in two years come up to you and say, "Good story". I'm lucky it's happened once in two months for me.

There are no appraisals here. If you've joined at QR 5000, it's what you're gonna continue getting whether you do ten people's work or stop doing even your own. No annual raises.

It is unimaginable how less people care about the media here. Yes, they'd read the papers, they'd watch news channels, but when it comes to reacting to it, they won't. So responses are almost none.

You could probably write the synopsis of Amar Akbar Anthony under the headline 1o77 dead in Antarctica bomb blast and just about be almost sure that you won't be getting any Letters to the Editor by next evening.

All your colleagues mind their own business. What time you come in, what time you go, makes absolutely no difference to them, as long as you finish your work, which you could really finish in about four to five hours, including five cig and coffee breaks.

Moreover, unlike in India, where people literally kill others so that they could appear in newspapers, here no one wants their names to appear anywhere in print. Do you see what I see? It's pretty darn hard to get quotes on any issue whatsoever.

Even if you do manage to finish off a story, which you would probably take two hours to finish in India (including getting the information), in three long days, and you write it absolutely brilliantly, not a soul will care.

It might be worth mentioning, that even if you have to do a feature on the zoo here, you have to take written permission from the government first.

It's one reason why in 64 days here in Qatar I have filed only 15 quality features. Not that I care about the quantity at all... it's just an example.

But even if I had filed two, no one would have said or done anything to me. They don't want to. No one, including the editor, wants to get into any sort of controversy. After all, it's not from their pocket that your salary is coming from.

Yes, it's coming from someone's pocket, and that someone, whoever that is, has too much of it to bother about a few thousand riyals going waste.

So, it's really easy, isn't it? Everything here. Just sit back, do the work you're assigned, don't care about what the results are...

I can't do it. I hate working, but when I work, which is rather rare, I like to do it really well. More so that it makes up for the rarity. Besides, everytime I write, I try to prove a point to myself - that I write well.

But it's tough... Tough for a person who needs to be pushed for him to move his ass.

Tough, because there's nothing here to motivate you - but you.

Oops... so sorry... didn't realize that you worked for a regional paper until I read this post. Had I known, I would have phrased my earlier comment slightly different. I see that you removed it and apologize profusely if that is an indication that you took offense. Really, I'm sorry.

Hilarious!
I guess Indian media differs only in minor ways, though.

There is a reason for this conman, In India (or other 'old' countries for that matter) we have an established society in which a) there are indigenous people from top to bottom and
b) people CARE on what is happening to them, around them.

People there socialise in different ways - the sharabi's go the maykhana, the kababis go to the kothas, the literati find time out in reading, writing and discussions and so on on so forth.

But in the Gulf you have 2 categories- the locals and the expats. The already rich locals are busy trying to make themselves more happy and more rich and the expats want to make more money(however they can).

There is no indegenous working population from top to bottom. Work here is for expats. And expats will work and not care if the Bush and saddam get married or if the inside of Khomenis beard says "made in Israel".

You should consider coming to Dubai. It is not perfect by any means, but we are gaining press freedoms here by the month. People are also starting to see that if you scream loud enough, things can change. I could give you example after example, and it is in many ways thanks to the press. I have been to Doha, and it's pretty f'ing boring, although I do like Qataris. Think about it.

Anonymous: Maybe some day I will come to Dubai. As of now, I have loads to learn about Qatar. At least for a year, I ain't leaving this place.
Then I'll see where the road I see in front of me leads to...

Well, good luck. I come to Doha often to cover press events. I will look for you at the next big press conference. Do you look like your photo or is that someone else?

Why in the world should I post someone else's picture on my blog??? That is me.
But don't hope to see me at press conferences. I don't go where the crowd goes.
I find my own stories... I don't cover press conferences...
Sorry to disappoint you.

Believe me, you have no idea how many people do that (post some model's photo). Good luck on uncovering the good stories. You have your work cut out for you. FYI, if you ever do get a good story, try selling it to some US or European outlets, where quality does count.

I am not intersted in money anonymous. Have too much of it already. Any more and it would begin to scare me. So no intentions of trying to sell anything to anyone.
And quality counts no where but within me.
if a "European or a US outlet" is intersted in what I write, they can come to me. I don't need to go to them.
get the picture now? I hope so.

Are we all a little demented????

Indeed we all are. Those who claim otherwise are liars. Those who are a bit headstrong are on the borderline. But yes, we all are demented.

I AM HAPPY IN QATAR...

So am I in Oman. And yet we crib (not meant at thyself, but at yours truely, moi). Was just offering a comparison of the same line of work that you in.

Good day.

Wow, why are you so defensive Yours Truly? We are all just reacting to YOUR own post about how hard it is to get ppl to read your stories and how hard it is to get anyone to care about quality writing. The reason I suggested US and European outlets is because of the top notch editing process, not the money, asshole. No one goes into journalism for the money. We do it for the love of writing and the chance to make a change. We are on your side here. Also, I mentioned that about your photo because I think you are hot, not because I am accusing you of posting someone else's photo. Why are you so touchy? Don't you recognize a friendly voice?

you said it all in your title, Good one.. Yeah its the hardest to motivate oneself.. but its the true test of character I think.. You must admit that to run your own business you have no other option but to motivate yourself, when we are pushed we can do it. Nice post.

I think it's awesome that u r ur own motivation/inspiration. In fact that's the best way to be. Imagine searching for motivation in times when u desperately need it, in places where u'd never find it... that'll lead to a writer's block. Something ppl like u n me just can't think about :)
