This is not yet confirmed, though I am still on it to know exact details about what happened, but it is being said that last week "a foreigner wearing a very tight revealing sleevless top" was roaming at the City Centre Mall with her friends, when a "Mutawa (Religious Police) sort of a guy with a really long beard sans a moustache caught her by her arm and slapped her like really hard in public" for wearing what she was.
This is exactly what eye-witnesses say.
Now don't get it wrong. If this has happened, it's not that it usually happens this way. People don't go around slapping you if you are wearing what they think is wrong for a woman to wear or any such thing.
In Saudi, yes. They will beat you up black and blue if you are a woman and have walked out on the road without hiding each and every bit of your body, including your face, behind a burqa (veil) whether you are an Arab or a westerner or an Indian.
But in Qatar, that's not the case. It's not as strict. Women wear what they want.
Obviously, you're in Qatar and you naturally won't go out wearing a mini skirt or like a really really revealing top with your tits practically popping out. If you do, you're craving for trouble and there's something seriously mentally wrong with you.
I have been around, and have on several occassions seen foreigners in tank tops, really short ones with their stomach all exposed along with their pierced belly button. They aren't stopped or questioned or slapped around. Sure, they'll have all the sexually frustrated Arabs leching and drooling at them, but no one would really say anything.
But usually people dress, well, decently, if I may say (not intending to say wearing short tops or short skirts is in any way indecent). Decently as in, not dressed too loud for Qatar.
I mean I was told I wouldn't be able to roam around in shorts and my sleevless tops, but that turned out to be absolute bullshit.
I wear capris, I wear shorts, I wear sleevless shirts and not a soul says anything to me.
I am guessing either the girl was way way way too inappropriately dressed, which is unlikely, because when you come to Qatar you just automatically start dressing up with the local population in mind. Probably out of respect, maybe out of fear, but you do.
Or either she was plain unlucky to have that psycho fucking man cross her path.
How dare you slap a woman coz you don't like what she's wearing? You can friggin go have four wives, screw another ten mistresses everyday, while your wives take off their veils once they leave home and go to other men to get what they don't get from you, and you got the friggin audasity to slap a woman coz she wore a tight top in public...
I don't blame Islam for this. I blame these idiotic, foolish, uneducated, fanatics who have got Islam all wrong and believe it is right, and actually believe themseves to be the protectors of the religion.

Disgusting. Fined or taken to court would still be understandable.. but how dare they slap someone!
My blood boileth...
Oh Boy! I had no idea that Qatar too has Mutawas.
I tried searching the net. Coulnd't fin any links suggesting there exist Mutawas in Qatar.
Maybe the Mutawas of Saudi, who get $300 for every person they arrest in Saudi, has overshadowed their existence in Qatar and have never really been written about.
Maybe.
Else, also possible that the guy who slapped her wasn't really a Matawa but just a regular fanatic local.
I remember when we first arrived here in Qatar, we went to one orientation seminar. We were given all the infos about life in Qatar. That guy told us to avoid shorts and minis especially during Ramadan. Maybe he was a regular guy not a Mutawa.

Even if she was dressed in a bikini, it DOES NOT warrant a slap. Thats like saying oh someone dressed 'indecently' is asking to be raped.
Which century are we living in, again?
She shoulda bitchslapped him right back. TWICE!
I'd very much like to do this honorable man a grand favor by gouging his eyes out so he'd never have to see any woman for the rest of his life. He'd thank me for it, I'm sure. Then we'd both go to heaven.
Is India far behind? Some places in India, esp Chennai still believe that a girl and boy talking is 'flirting' and college administrations take u to task if u are found doing that. Some colleges fine girls for wearing sleevless tops too! I was shocked to read that in rediff yesterday: http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/oct/03sw.htm ...it is basically sick men who are badly in need of psychiatric help who do all this!
Low riders (jeans) were recently banned from schools in Italy, Claytonia has a point.
clay the latest is that they have ven decided that college students can't wear colored clothes.

How can you not expect this from a country that is trying to build for itself a reputation as a tourism spot, and does not offer TOURIST VISAS!! what ,only blood relatives can visit!
As far as I know, Qatar grants tourist visas. Check this link on how to get one.
